Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, Jonathan Lippman, announced Wednesday that he would "boost to $10,000 from $5,000 payments [state judges] receive to cover a wide range of expenses, from uncovered medical care to judicial license plates."  Judges receive an "allowance," arranged as a taxed "lump sum" for "commuting costs, Internet service, home security systems, life insurance and health care, marriage counseling and other expenses."  The "enhanced benefit" seemed to come in lieu of a salary raise, which Judge Lippman said would be difficult at present given "finite resources."
