Author Query: Secrecy and Technology Question
Frederick A.O. "Fritz" Schwarz, Jr, Brennan Center Attorney, former Church Committee Senior Counsel and author, Unchecked and Unbalanced: Presidential Power in a Time of Terror (New Press, 2009) is working on a new book about secrecy and democracy. Mr. Schwarz and his researcher associate, Richard Mo, are interested in the relationship between technology and government secrecy. They note that technology made it possible to broadcast battlefield scenes all over the world and thus limits government's ability to dictate war narrative; meanwhile, available technology -- such as computer encryption -- has enhanced the government's ability to keep secrets secret.
The writer asks: What is your view of the relationship between technology and secrecy? Are there additional examples of technology that limit or enhance government secrecy?
