Letter to Senate Leaders on FIRST STEP Act

The prison reform bill being considered by Congress includes several important improvements, but in a letter to Senate leadership the Brennan Center notes that any true reform effort must take steps to reduce the number of people entering prison in the first place.

In a letter to Senate leadership, members of the Brennan Center’s Justice Program said the bill, called the FIRST STEP Act, is “inadequate to effectively address the miscarriage of justice that is mass incarceration.” They argued that it should be amended to include sections of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.
